Does anyone have any suggestions for a peg board toy for DD2, aged 4? I googled and found only simple, large pegs toys like for a 2 year old. I am looking for small colored pegs, kind of like Lite Brite pieces, that she can put into a pegboard in different designs, like a heart, or random groups of colors. Maybe she could string a rubber band between the pegs to make the shape. I remember playing with an educational toy like that when I was in kindergarten or 1st grade.

I brought an old Mastermind game back from my parents and DD2 loved sorting and inserting all the pegs. I am looking for something like that which will leave my beloved Mastermind intact.

I'm not sure this is what you are looking for, but it may work. You wouldn't have to make the characters with them. From what I can tell the Pacman one has 130 yellow pegs, 130 red pegs, 30 white pegs, 140 blue pegs, 30 brown pegs and 60 cream pegs.

There are others that may be better:

And in the first one, it looks like the pegs are sold separately.

This one looks neat, but is out of stock... maybe they'll tell you who makes it?

This is a great set! Doesn't light up or anything, but the kids love making pictures with it.

As for rubber bands on one, you are thinking more of a geoboard. A peg set like this one can typically be flipped over to use as a geoboard with rubber bands and the pegs can be strung like beads. Both things stretch the age bracket of it. http://www.discountschoolsupply.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?product=16650&keyword=pegs

If you want a way to use a makeshift one, you can use styrofoam and golf tees. Kids can make pictures, their names, etc. by pushing the peg(golf tee) into the dense foam.
