Highlights with drugstore color-ideas?

I want to do something with my hair.It's dark...brown bordering on black.I want to do highlights.....something to mix things up.I can only afford a drugstore kit.Ideas?

My hair is dark blond/light brown and I've got pretty decent results from Revlon Frost & Tip, but it isn't a fun process and it left my hair kind of dry. However, I wouldn't recommend trying to do it yourself since your hair is dark. Most at home highlighting kits are single process and may leave you with orangey streaks.

the old magazines.

I think it was last month's issue of Real Simple magazine
that had a home haircolor article.

I wouldn't do highlights your self, but I have done a *washes out in 28 days* Natural Instincts type of thing on my very dark chestnut brown hair. I have found a color wash just gives me a brighter feeling, and I usually choose something close to my hair color or maybe red.
