I am looking for something somewhat unique, like something I might not have seen at a big box retailer but not necessarily something custom. Something like BabyLegs- a product I probably wouldn't have heard of w/o this board. :)

Do you have any ideas? I want to get something that the mom might not know about but would find really neat and useful.

How about a gift basket? You could put in baby legs, a Sigg or KK bottle, and a boo boo buddy. I love giving Boo Boo buddies as gifts because the second year they are constantly falling and it's something parents don't necessarily think to buy. I see them kind of like a placebo effect because it instantly calms down my kids. We have Baby gund puppy that is really cute http://www.collector-connection.com/feel-better-spunky-pink-puppy-by-baby-gund.html We also have a plush My Little Pony ice pack that I bought in the first aid section of Target, and a few gel boo boo buddies that I bought at various places. THey look like this and are about $5. http://www.amazon.com/Boo-Buddy-Cold-Assorted-Shapes/dp/B000S8280E

One of our favorite gifts to mark a special occassion is to have a flag flown over the US Capitol on that day. You can arrange this through your US Senator or Representative (check their website, usually under "Constituent Services"). You pay for the cost of the flag and you can choose between a nylon or cotton flag and the size. The flag will arrive with a certificate a couple of weeks after the event, but we always make a card on the computer that says "A flag is being flown over the US Capitol for you today."

I LOVE these little ABC block books for that age.

http://www.amazon.com/Block-Books-Susan-Estelle-Kwas/dp/0811824748/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222209188&sr=1-12

My girls got a set around that age and I have given them as gifts. They are little, there is one for each letter with a few pictures of things starting with that letter, and they are (sort of) stackable. My girls loved the small size and all the pictures.

Other than that, I like music at that age - maybe a Putumayo kids cd (Animal Playground is one of our favorites) plus some cute maracas from World Market (I think they have animal ones).

I have ordered books and CDs from:

http://www.reading-about-me.com/

The lady who runs this has provided excellent customer service with each order. (I have made 4 orders). If you sign up for her mailing list, you will get information on the monthly specials. This week she is offering a "My Day on Sesame Street", "My Fishing Adventure", and "Teddy Bear Land" books at 50% off. I think the price for the 50% books is $7.49 and includes SH.

My kids love the personalized CDs.

Reading-About-Me also donates a portion of their sales to support medical expenses for two children in the Pheonix area.

Do you have time to order online from LE? I hate to sound like a broken record, but I LOVE LE canvas totes. They just rock for taking toys on trips, to restaurants, GPs house, etc..

You could put a personalized CD in it, along with a personalized bath/swimming towel or coverup.

I have a standard list of items that I choose from to make a 1st birthday gift bag:

- cute bib
- toothbrush and safe-to-swallow toothpaste
- paci clip, if the child still uses a paci
- stacking cups
- small O-ball
- board book
- playsilks
- Burts Bees diaper rash cream or Baby Bee lotion
- bubble bath
- babylegs
- CD

At that price range, I'd also consider getting Robeez, a sippy Kleen Kanteen, a Signing Time! DVD. . . and probably other things that I am not thinking of right now. :)
