My brother picked out a science set called Snaptricity for DS for his 6th birthday. I thought "oh, yay, another junk science set". But this one isn't!! It's an electricity set with plans for different set-ups, and it is easy enough for DS to do alone, and seems quite durable compared to what I'm used to seeing. The parts snap together using metal snaps, and are easy to assemble and disassemble. I'm guessing that it came from a specialty toy store but it is online many places, too. We've only had it a few days so I can't comment on the long-range durability, but I know that there are kids in the 5-6-7yo range on this board who would love it!! It is rated for ages 8+ but DS is doing just fine with it.

Thanks for the idea! This is definitely going on my Christmas list for my 8YO science guy. He's getting harder to buy for but he loves all things science so this would be fun!

As another similar suggestion, DS has loved Snap Circuit Jr. for years now, and has now moved on to the full model. Based on the 5 star reviews, we are not alone!

Thanks Lori and Melissa. My DS would LOVE those projects. I'm adding them to his wish list.
Thanks! My oldest, who is soon-to-be-six, loves building things and doing science experiments, so this will be perfect for him.

I had heard of them before but had no idea how amazing they were until yesterday. I made a trip up to Lakeshore Learning to take a look at their playfood and noticed these displayed on a shelf. There was a playtable near by and a little girl was interacting with them. Her and I guess her brother were having a blast making their own characters. The pieces are nothing like I could have ever imagined them to be. They are not small connecting parts but gigantic works of breathtaking art. The colors were so eye pleasing with unique colors of "texture"... Shiny, so shiny you could feel it just by looking. The Sea one was especially beautiful with all sorts of sea inspired pieces. We live near the beach so DD1 will be getting this set at Christmas for sure. They are very hard for me to describe and of course the pictures they have up on the web don't do this fascinating toy justice. The Dragon set actually flys, and there ones that glow in the dark (plain or even multi-colored of course), all with moving parts like claws, wings etc, and there is even an easy peesy make your own mobile kit. I gotta tell you that I don't think I've ever been this impressed with a toy before. I enjoyed talking with the knowledgeable store manager. She recommends it starting at 3 or 4 years but they also make a set for the under three crowd. Its the bug one and I will be giving that one to the twins for Christmas. Bonz are apparently a hit. Its definitely going to be one of the first gifts choose to give. I'm sure no duplicates with this one lol! They are very unique indeed, what a GEM!
FYI-They are compatible with Zolo.

My twins just got snaptricity for their 6th b-day. One of our friends whose then 5 yo son attended a science camp got the same set during camp. He and his 8 yo brother love playing with it so she thought my DC would like it too. So far they've made a couple of the projects with their dad. I'd like them to get the hang of it first before I let them go at it themselves. Don't want them to short circuit anything.

Great thread. DS had fun last year playing with Snap Circuits at a children's museum, and I've been keeping my eye out for this type of toy to add to our homeschooling supplies. I'll be checking out these and the Bonz as well :)

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. These all look like great toys. I will definitely keep the Snap Circuits in mind for Christmas for my 6yo DD and the Bonz look cool for either DD.
