Ok,call me stupid but what exactly are K'nex?

I've seen them at the resale stores quite a bit lately and I'm just wondering what the heck these things are. Are they modern tinkertoys? Are they like the erector sets that we used to play with? Maybe I've never noticed before because my eldest is a girl but I'm seeing these things around and I'm wondering.

They are kind of like a combination of tinker toys and erector sets made out of plastic. They are actually very cool, but definitely take some skill to put together. You can build all kinds of things, and they come with a bunch of ideas. DH loves to build them with my kids. Not a good toy under age 5, older if fine motor delays.
