I got an appointment for DD with a ped allergist on November 11th. They offered me November 4th, but I thought DS's school might be closed. It isn't closed, so I'm calling back tomorrow to change the appointment to Nov. 4th. They said it would be 45 minutes to 1 hour and a first appointment would not include any skin testing at all on a child DD's age (not until the doctor talks with me and examines DD).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had posted earlier about how DD may be having some allergy/sensitivity issues to foods. Well, last night I made her meatballs (totally plain, nothing mixed in), brocoli and let her eat a potato roll. Big mistake. She ended up with a small but noticeable rash above her lip. And yes, the potato roll contained wheat and soy. She is totally off soy milk (switched to rice milk). I'm afraid to let her eat any crackers, breads, snack foods that we currently have etc that are not soy and wheat free. We do not have any type of confirmed allergy as yet because this all just started, so I'm not sure if I should totally eliminate things from her diet and get her the wheat and soy free products now, or let her eat something again and see if it happens again (not a big fan of that since she has had 3 skin rashes this week alone).

That's a tough one. I would maybe try to give her a piece of soy free bread/crackers first and see if she has a reaction. Then if you feel comfortable maybe try giving her a really small piece of a potato roll? I think I would maybe call the ped too, they might be able to tell you what direction to go in. Did the meatball have egg in it?

All the ped told me was that if it was a rash don't worry about it. If it was/is hives bring DD in. If she looked like she was/is having trouble breathing then call 911. They did tell me to lay off all known allergens--eggs, strawberries, peanuts, treenuts (she has never had nuts of any kind b/c they told me to hold off until age 2 like DS). The meatballs had nothing in them. I literally took ground beef and rolled it into balls right out of the package. They said nothing of soy or wheat though. But I am thinking that since she drinks so much soy milk that it would be a good idea to not drink that for awhile and see what happens.

This would piss me off, and I would call back and ask for a name of a ped allergist NOW!! It can take months to get in, so you should call and get an appointment. If she is continuing to break out in a rash, it IS something to worry about. Ugh...sorry, my own frustrations with food allergies came out in that one!!!

If you can separate out ingredients, give it a try. Go back to the baby days of trying something for 3 or 4 days before adding another ingredient. Unless, of course, she breaks out in a rash, then discontinue that ingredient.

I would really really recommend getting her scheduled with a ped allergist, though, not matter what your ped says.

were there eggs in your meatballs? that is a common allergen?

Or could it have been pasta sauce if you cooked them in that? The tomatoes can be irritating to the skin

Nope. No eggs and no sauce. I literally gave them to her plain, and she was not at all happy about it.

This. It can take months to see a pediatric allergist, and given your current ped's attitude about the rash she does not have the medical knowledge to advise you on this! This is not a slam on your ped- I found that most general peds are not adequately trained in this area.

I don't want to sound dismissive of your allergy concerns, but my DD had a mild rash on his face that reappeared like that after eating. I brought it up to our Ped (luckily had an appt already scheduled while it was happening). He said that it could just be skin sensitivity and irritation, especially with seasons changing, and to just try aquafor for a few days. That did the trick and we haven't had a recurrence. I think I missed your previous post, so not sure if I got all the details, but I hope that is just irritation. I would still seek out the allergist appointment just in case though.

DD has excema already. We have it pretty well under control on her arms, legs and torso. Her face also gets lotion daily so there will be no breakouts. Plus, her breakouts have been on her forehead mostly. The rash is always in the same place and happening sometimes, not after each meal or a hot (temp wise) meal. Plus it comes on quickly and is gone after a few hours. But I don't really know at this point. We don't go back to the ped until the beginning of December.

:yeahthat: Totally, and while you're waiting, keep a food/reaction diary.

Yup. She is 16 months and she has been eating table food since she was 7 months old. I tried babyfood when we started solids but she refused ALL of it, so I have been doing single foods of table food since the very beginning pretty much. Although, she quickly moved to just eating exactly what we were eating (we waited to introduce things like eggs, strawberries, fish until the ped said it was ok). Add to that she never showed any signs of issues with any foods except milk. The ped did say that food sensitivities/allergies can occur pretty much at any time and seeing something at DD's age for the first time is not uncommon.

I meant to ask that, too. I swear my DS has a beef intolerance/allergy/sensitivity but he has never been tested b/c has rarely had it and I forgot last time he had testing. Beef and other meat allergies exist!

Ok, I really do think I need to take DD to a ped allergist. Just wrapping my head around what I have to do to figure out exactly what is causing the rash on her face and tush is overwhelming. Not to mention how to really know if she is allergic to soy as well or if her stuffy nose is just that - a stuffy nose.

OYE!

Same here - DD got red dots around her mouth when I gave her ground beef last Spring. Weird thing is she's had beef hot dogs before at daycare. So I don't know if it was the form of beef or some sort of cross contamination issue with it. She was supposed to be tested for it this Spring at Johns Hopkins but somehow it was omitted from the form. I should give it to her again but I just give her chicken and turkey all the time and I'll try to have her tested at the local allergist next time.

HIU8 - When you get her tested I would have beef checked, since you mentioned giving her beef stew the other time.

Many children who have dairy allergies have soy allergies. With a peanut allergy in the family and a known dairy allergy in my DD, we avoided soy as much as possible. I believe it is a common allergen so I don't know why they did not tell you to avoid it.

Something just clicked for me - ummm.. beef = cow = milk and you mentioned milk sensitivity. I know at least one mom IRL who had to cut out any cow-related products while her DC was nursing. Just eliminating milk wasn't enough, she couldn't have beef either.

When we figured out that DD had a milk sensitivity (not going to call it an allergy at this point since she has never even been tested) the ped told me to switch her to soy. That worked since she was 12 months old (we figured out the milk thing in less than a week because she was throwing up constantly). I've taken things into my own hands and switched to rice milk though.

Well, beef isn't one of DD's favorites anyway, so she won't miss it. I'm going to eliminate it as well and see what happens. I hope she doesn't get sick of chicken. She can still eat cheese and yogurt with no issue so at least we have that as well. She isn't crazy about fish, but I keep trying...

When Ds started having reaction to milk (started with redness around the mouth), I eliminated other things that we had recently started, incl. wheat until I got allergy testing. It was easy though, b/c we were just starting foods.

ETA: and yes, a few with milk allergy also can't have beef (and some with egg allergy also can't have chicken). FWIW, DS's milk (and mustard) allergy started with some flat redness around his mouth that I wiped off and it went away, but the 3rd exposure was full on all face hives, vommitting, etc. It could be just a skin irritation, but it could be allergies. Too bad your ped was so dismissive!

Can't you take her to an allergist for a test instead of playing guessing games?
