I'm making a cake for my mom's bday and I've never had success with neatly frosting a boxed cake. I've tried to freeze a cake for an hour, but that wasn't long enough. Do I freeze it solid?? Like overnight? Or a few hours?
I'm just trying to figure out my timing.
Thanks!

Having watched my grandmother and aunt bake wedding cakes, their cakes were always frozen solid. There's were always in over night, but I'd think a few hours would be enough.
They also used the trick of keeping a hot cup of water next to them and dipping the knife in it to smooth the icing out after it's been put on.
