I've just realized my DS doesn't have any blocks. I would like to buy some for Christmas or his BD in Jan. Was thinking of buying a set that we could add to later. Any thoughts or recs?

TIA!!

This is probably not what you are looking for, but this has been one of my kids' absolute favorite's for a LOOOOONG time now.

We don't have any typical blocks, but they love these.

I have the FP peek-a-blocks that my 8 month old loves (and DD5 is so excited they are back out at our house).
But if you are looking for long term I would get a set of wooden blocks - natural or colored (I vote for color). I have a few sets I bought at garage sales - DD 5 has loved these since I got them when she was 3 and we still play with them a lot. DD8mos picks them up and chews on them. Melissa and Doug (among others) make them - I think that's what our are.

When DD was about that age, we got her a set of the Step 2 Soft & Sturdy blocks. http://www.step2.com/product.cfm?product_id=1356&related=true

She loved them them and still loves to play with them now. They are foam, so they almost "stick" a little to one another, so it's easier for little ones to build. She got frustrated with wood or plastic blocks at that age because they slid off of each other. She also wasn't a huge fan of MegaBlox at that age (but likes them now).

We bought these (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2985594) for DDs first birthday. She enjoys stacking them as much as pulling them around. I like that they are natural wood and don't have to worry about plastics or paint.

If you don't mind spending a small fortune the Haba sticki-bausteine (sp??) blocks are very nice - - they have a little knob on each block that fits into the adjoining block making them easier to stack. They are on the oompa.com site and also on a toy store site called gifted imaginations that is currently running 20% off, free shipping over $65.
