What is this sound coming out of my laptop?

I like to think I know my way around basic and maybe even above average computer skills, but I keep getting this random sound like an opening door coming out of my laptop. DH usually uses it and I took it on a business trip, so not sure if he downloaded something? It's freaking me out cuz everytime it happens I think someone is hacking in to my pc. I'm just surfing the web when it happens, not opening or closing any windows or websites...anyone know what it is and how do I make it stop? TIA

Do you have a buddy list? DH explained to me that on AOL, you can set that sound so that anytime someone on your buddy list comes on or off line, the sound of that door opening/closeing. He has it set on his, I don't on mine.
