Tips for best rates on cruises?

We are thinking about taking a short, 3 day cruise in January. Any tips on getting the best deals? Cruise lines that are best?

When we planned ours, we used www.cruisecompete.com. You enter the cruise you want, and travel agencies post their quotes - most of the time the quotes are similar, but they may offer on board credits, travel insurance, etc. We were very happy with it :)
