View Full Version : skip Little People . . . directly to Playmobil??
Can a two-year old play with Playmobil if I take away all the tiny pieces and just leave the bigger ones? I am trying to reduce all the toy clutter in my house and if there is a way to avoid it I would like to not have to buy the plastic Little People and then a few years later buy Playmobile.
Any advice?

Yes absolutely! That is exactly what we did... and there are some other benefits besides the lack of clutter... The biggest for my DD was that the playmobile people could bend and sit down. When interest starts to dwindle I add in a accessory piece or two (that I originally took away) and interest is rekindled. They are 'better plastic' than vinyl if your DC still mouths things(if that matters to you).

There is also the Playmobil 1-2-3 line which is for younger kids. We have a few of those pieces.
I also have to recommend the duplo sets - my girls much prefer them to both little people and playmobil. just another idea!

Some of the new Little People twist, sit and hold things in their hands. The Dance and Twirl Palace has this. Also, the princesses dresses are fabric. I think my DD is enjoying that part of them quite a bit.

My DS loved the Playmobil 1-2-3 sets at 2, and the bonus is now that he's getting into regular playmobil, he can still use the 1-2-3 stuff with it. He's got them all thrown in together now.

My DD loves her Playmobil. I started her off with the 1.2.3 pieces when she was 1 yo, and we just introduced regular Playmobil this past fall (3.5 yo).
Be warned that the 1.2.3 Elephant will get stuck in the u-bend of a toilet and require a plumber to extract. :rolleye0014:

if your christian imo the FP LP Nativity set is a must have and would be a great idea. you dont have to own multiple sets of LP. One is just fine. I like this idea because it can be saved for years and brought out every year at christmas time. i'm saving ours for future grandkids. the baby Jesus is adorable! ;) the set comes with people and animals and a cute stable that lights up and plays "away in a manger".
We have the newer LP sets and like them very much. They are very much like the FP Dollhouse dolls 3+ but scaled safely for the under 3 crowd. perfect imo. we have eddies boulder site, camping adventure, palace, and carriage and all of them are played with daily. they never touched the 1yr+ farm, and garage. sold that on craigslist. the new sets are samller and easier to store as well.

Personally, I'm waiting on Playmobil. The fact that the pieces are so small and we'll have people under 3 in our house for quite a while yet is making me stick with LP. DD loves them, and I love that she and DS can play with them together.

LP are great for little kids. Like a PP stated you don't need tons of sets for the kids to enjoy them. I personally would wait for PlayMobil.

I think you should wait. Not only does the playmobil have a ton of small parts, BUT the bigger toys don't stay together. This has been frustrating for my kids who are 3 and almost 5. I have heard some parents with almost 5 yrs old who got their kids the playmobil pirate ship and their kids get frustrated, b/c the pirate ship keeps falling apart. We have a playmobile snow cat type of toy and it falls apart all of the time. My friend's almost 2 yr old was trying to play with it the other day and was very frustrated about it. Plus, all of those smaller pieces that come off of the big toy are choking hazards.

Depends on the kid, I guess. My DS1 has the large airplane, and the fact that pieces fall off when it "crashes" is a plus in his book....

To my 3 yr old, what is fun about playmobil ARE the accessories. I would try out playmobil 1,2,3 instead of moving right to the real deal.
As for little people, those worked for us from about 12mo -2yr. He does still like the airplane. Just not the other sets we have (they got boring I guess) like the farm and the playground.

I would not advocate it for everyone, but my newly 2 year old is flipping obsessed w/ big brother's PM stuff. I can't believe it. She particularly likes the camper he got. She was just playing with him tonight, pouring OJ into the mugs for the people, making them wash their hands, etc. It is the longest I've seen her play with a single toy, and she's been doing it every single evening (they get the camper out at night).
I've been considering duplo or PM 123 people for her, but now I"m kind of torn. She's totally loooooving his stuff.
Just thought i'd add my 2 cents with my observations since Christmas.

You can definitely skip the Little People. We never had them.
We were given some Playmobil 1,2,3 and DS liked those very much, and we've now got them all combined with the other Playmobil stuff.

we had *some* LP with charlie, but at 2 he became a playmobil addict, lol. we never went back. our house is LP-free and max & ern don't play with them unless at someones house, PM works for us :)
keep in mind though that the hair can come off and be a choking hazard. my kids can pull the hair off, but after telling them that ernie may choke they don't do it anymore. luckily ernie doesnt stick anything in his mouth since we do have lots of PM acessories laying about.

See, I think this is going to be my dd. I would have never recommended going right to PM, but since her big brother has it, it is here anyway. And she looooooves it LOL. We just got her the horse trailer/jeep set and she brushes the horse, puts the saddle on and off, the blanket on and off the horse, the person on the horse and in the car. She's been sleeping holding the horse (she's in this total horse adoration phase...) at night LOL.
Gald to know the PM love persisted with your kids LOL.
