XPOST - white noise machine and/or CD?

expecting our first in a couple of months

just finished reading the happiest baby on the block - interesting book. i don't think i subscribe to all he says, but the 5 Ss seem reasonable to try

for the shushing...was wondering if anyone used/recommended a specific white noise machine and/or a CD

i'm not so into whipping out a vacuum or a hair dryer in the middle of a frenzy...

What about putting your stereo on a channel that doesn't come in? It's essentially the same noise. Also, if it's warm outside, I recommend going outside to listen to the ambiant noise of outside. We live in a city, near a highway, so we have more noise than the average area, but when DS2 was fussy, DH would just sit on the porch with him. He'd pretty much always fall asleep.

I have used the marpac white noise machine with both of my children. I really like it.

cds have a ramp-up and ramp-down at the start & finish of each "song". the noise changes woke my ds up....
