When I saw the thread title, the book that popped into my head was the autobiography of Frederick Douglass. It's an amazing book, and YA-appropriate. But 6 is too young both in terms of reading level and issues/content.

I'm sorry, I'm not a teacher and don't have a LO that age so I'm just not sure what would be right for a 6 year old.

a bet of a stretch would be the Dear America series. lacks the famous people but you get the time periods.

and a complete stretch would be the young indiana youngs dvds: basically young indy meets all sorts of famous people growing up. fun dvd series.

In all actuality i would ask the librarian, they were always great and knowldegeable when i was a child and now as an adult

We have a book about MLK Jr out of the library now that I think was pretty good. My DDs are 6 and 4 and I think it was appropriate while still being historically accurate. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Martin-Luther-King-JR-Day/Mir-Tamim-Ansary/e/9781403488893/?itm=23) by Mir Tamim Ansary

Some other good ones we own are, off the top of my head, And Then What Happened, Paul Revere? (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/And-Then-What-Happened-Paul-Revere/Jean-Fritz/e/9780698113510/?itm=4) by Jean Fritz, Paul Revere's Ride (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Paul-Reveres-Ride/Henry-Wadsworth-Longfellow/e/9780140556124/?itm=1) by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Space Heroes (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Space-Heroes-Amazing-Astronauts/James-Buckley/e/9780789498960/?itm=1) by James Buckeley, Jr.

Definitely check out other stuff by Jean Fritz - her books are wonderful! She has many on various historical topics/people.

ETA: Oops, just noticed you were looking for 1 book. I don't know one comprehensive book off-hand. Sorry!

E (again!) TA: I just found these Ready-To-Read books from the Stories of Famous Americans series (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?SID=320111) - I haven't seen them in person but I think that based on other "Level 3" books we've read before they would be fine for a 6yo.
