I need some good demos for my night class, they are with me for 4.5 hours, we do lab for 2 hours, I would like to spice up the lecture.

We have a pretty good chem storage. Unfortunately, we don't have Na or K, so I can't take a little and put them in water, one of my favs. We have Potassium permanganate but not glycerin, so I can't do a cool exo rxn.

I would like to do some mixing to make ppts next week since we are getting into rxns.

Help me out.

I'll ask DH if he has any ideas.

One of his profs from undergrad was/is (?) an editor for one of the chemistry education journals, and DH always said that he did some fun demos in class.

anything here?

Do you have any Lycopodium powder? That's can make for a spectacular demo.

Can you give any more info on the specific class you are teaching?

It is a 1 semester 5 credit hour, intro to chem survey. It is primarily for engineers, but has a lot of master's in nursing and physical therapy students. Basically, it is an entire year of intro to chem, condensed into one semester, one night per week for 4.5 hours. It is kind of intense and I want to make it as interesting as possible.

I pm'd you some precipitation reactions that worked well for me. For atomic spectroscopy, you could burn different metal salts in methanol, I darken the room and you can see the different color flames, that one went over well. If can't do the Na/K in water rxn yourself, the students liked this youtube video. It is from the British show Brainiac, they go all the way to Cs!

ROFL about that link. DH (chemist) shows those to DS all of the time. He loves them.
