SIL's baby was given this diagnosis at her 18 week ultrasound and told the chances were greater than not the baby wouldn't live to birth or if it was a live birth wouldn't live past six weeks. But, it seems that there is also a chance the baby would have dwarfism but not have it be fatal or have major health problems. SIL's impression is that you would not know this until the baby was born.

I am worried that this might not have been the correct diagnosis of the ultrasound and don't understand why there isn't more info to be had about what type of spinal dysplasis her fetus has.

Anyone know anything or had any experience with this??

Hugs.
I found this that explains different types of skeletal dysplasia.

Maybe you could PM Tarah as she would know - she's a neonatologist. She posted a reply on the "when I grow up thread".

Can you SIL ask to see a specialist OB that could give her more information?

Thanks everyone, I am going to check out that article right away. We are all devastated. SIL is going to go to a geneticist for future pregnancies but I don't think she sees a future for this pregnancy and has no health insurance coverage to get a second opinion. I think the odds are quite high that her first opinion is correct in the diagnosis . . . completely sucks.

It is pretty common for spinal defects to be hard to fully diagnose via ultrasound. That's why with things like spina bifida, they typically do not really know the extent of the issue until after birth.

But regardless, I am very sorry your family is going through this.
