View Full Version : Question from my 6yo about umbilical cords

I don't know what the right answer is here- does it hurt the baby to have the umbilical cord cut? I said no but I can't quite convince myself of my reasons. :)

There is a blood supply, but no nerves. You need nerves to feel pain. Since there are no nerves in the umbilical cord, there's no pain :)

We have done delayed clamping with all of our children, and none have ever cried when their cord was cut. I agree - no nerves, no pain. Maybe you could liken it to having your fingernails trimmed? Yes, you are cutting a piece off, but it doesn't hurt??
