View Full Version : Hydrocele and penile torsion - experience?

When DS2 was born, the ped recommended not having him circ'd because she was concerned with hydroceles in his scrotum. And, it appeared that his penis had some torsion to it. We saw a urologist in August and returned for a follow-up today. The hydrocele is still there on one side for sure. He recommended surgery to repair the hydrocele on the right and we'll watch the left side to be sure it is closed. He also recommends that if we do want to circ, we do it at the same time and fix the torsional aspect of the penis.

As I understand it, the torsion isn't a health issue at all - it's just an appearance thing. But, the only way to correct it is through circ. The hydrocele has risks of having hernias through the opening, so should be fixed.

The surgery involves general anestesia and for the hydrocele is about 45 minutes and another 45 if we do the circ.

Does anyone have any experience with any of this?

We are looking for someone for a second opinion, but figured I'd ask here, too!

I PM'd you. Best wishes for your son's surgery and for your figuring out the right path for him.

Did it last fall for J. His Ped ENT and Ped Urologist did a tag team surgery that took less than an hour. During that time he got tubes in both ears, his "communicating" hydrocele fixed and a 'stitch' to take care of his retractile testi. Recovery was not an issue. He threw up a few times that day, but the next day was happy as could be and loved the surgery. He was excused from gym for 3 weeks, and did not ride his bike (although he wanted to.) One rough day for health, we can handle that!

His later ENT surgery was the trauma for us, he has a colostoma (sp?) (tumor) in his ear we are fighting with.

Modern medicine is amazing. The Urologist does not need to see him again now.

Remind me me of this later this year when we have another ENT surgery to if the nasty thing came back in his ear, or if we can continue reconstruction.

My advise is to like and trust your Dr. We are with CHOP, and our Ped practice sighted the original issues and then the specialists confirmed it. We know others who have used our Drs and recommend them.

How old was he? DS2 is 7 months now. I would prefer waiting a bit, since he will just freak if I am not with him at all times these days.

What is CHOP?

Thanks!

my oldest had a hernia / hydrocel surgery at 14 months. HIs recovery was really quick. His surgery was at 8am and we were home by noon. He resumed full activity in a day or so. My nephew had a different surgery to repair cordee with a hypospadious ( the hole in his penis was under the head instead of the end) They circ'd him at that time also. He had a much longer recovery ( cried when he peed for quite a while).

I believe the PP is referring to the Children's Hospital of PA. We've had GI consults and ear tubes done thru CHOP as well, can't say enough good things about them.
