Mods, feel free to move to the correct forum.

I am envisioning a bunkbed where the top bunk is not that high. Maybe 5 feet up? The bottom bunk is off the floor, but there is a substantial removable railing on it. A bonus would be a very tall railing that could fold in half. So you could sleep a young toddler in it and they wouldn't climb out. The ladder to the top would be more of a slanted stairway instead of the vertical ladders you see on most bunks.

Anything like this exist?

The ikea Kura is low to the ground- not sure it's even 5 ft.
The top bunk rail is pretty substantial- no bottom rail and no stairs though. The bottom mattress would be on the floor anyway.

I've seen this stair step bunk as low as $279- looks like regular height and no bottom rail- I don't love the top rail on this one either.

I've seen that second bunk before. While I don't love the rail either, what really scares me is that I know my younger one would start climbing the stairway. Just a higher place for her to take a tumble from.

Have you seen Berg (http://www.bergfurniture.com/sierra.asp?id=1) bunkbeds? They have a Captain's bed, which is basically a low bunk bed, which can take either a desk or another bed on the bottom in a T formation.

I've read some reviews where young children (3-year-olds) have been fine in the top bunk, because of the staircase.

Wow! I've seen versions of that for older kids. That is neat!

We got bunkbeds from here for my son (just turned 2). We use a universal bed rail on the bottom bunk. What I liked about these were there were lots of options as how they can be configured in the future. The one we picked out is pretty low.

We also got the maxtrix low loft system. It is very well made and you can do so many cofigurations with it. Lots of options. We have the double dresser and bookcase underneath. We bought it from

They have excellent customer service. Both Men I believe their names were Joseph and Paul were so helpful. I remember that there was an additional 5% off after I put it in the cart.

There are lots of other bunkbeds on the site as well. Call and talk to them. They are very helpful

We received the bunkbeds in less than a week and shipping was free.
