View Full Version : Yet another girl's name thread

It's early but we're looking for suggestions! DH and I seem to have different taste in names - he seems drawn to names common in the 50's and 60's for women (as a generation, our mothers' names), and I'm much more drawn to old fashioned names, those probably used by many of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers. We need to stay away from much of the z/s sound as our last name starts with Z and ends with s.

Some names that we like but are already taken by close family members (and can't be reused by us at this point) include Sarah, Molly, Megan, Kate/Katie/Katherine. We like Beatrix but it doesn't work with our last name. We also like Corinne/Corinna but it's quite similar to DS1's name.

And we need to do this x2 (at least - we've always gone into the delivery room with 2 names on hand and pick when we meet the baby, so feel like we need at least 3 good options this time around)!! But aren't looking for names that are "twinny" necessarily.

Any suggestions??

Thank you!!

What about Corinne/Corinna & Beatrix(or variations) as middle names....???

Either would go with the names I PMd you. LOL ;)

Our daughter is Katherine Anne- we call her Kate
You could always do a different spelling of Katherine- such as Catherine, Kathryn, etc. Or do like a Cate....

Anne is good-
Virginia (Ginna)
Liliana (Lily)
Rose
Genevieve (Gigi)
Lucille (Lucy)
Fiona (think, Thorn Birds)

I also like Martha (was my grandma's name); Esme is pretty too- I kinda like all those old traditional names-

I just recommend that whatever name you go with, it be something your child can spell or is easy for most people to figure out-so they don't have to always explain how to say their name all the way thru school!

Of course you could always go with something interesting- like APPLE!!!

Have fun and congrats!

Well, as an identical twin, I would advise avoiding twinny names, or ones that start with the same letter. My sister and I have unrelated names (Tarah and Nicole), and we liked it that way, lol.

Maybe these would fit the bill:

Stella
Ivy
Louise
Ruth
Ellen
Norah
Margaret
Rebecca

I generally prefer older names in general, but that's just my taste, so this list is a little biased...
grandmother's and older generation:

Emily/Emilie
Olivia (Liv) - I think this one is super-popular now though
Ava
Evelyn (Evie)
Edith
Celeste
Cecily
Sophie/Sophia
Laurel/Lauren
Eleanor (Nell)
Grace
Virginia (Ginny)
Ivy
Isabelle/Isabel/Isobel
Josephine (Jo)

mother's generation:

Jane

Sorry, for the life of me I can't think of more 50s names. In my mom's generation (just a decade older than that) there are lots of women named: Linda, Sandy, Bobbi, Mary-(fill in second name here), Nancy, and Pat.

You've gotten some great suggestions! Just wanted to second Nymbler, and also add the Social Security website to the list.

You can put in a specific year and see what the popular names were for that time.

If you like but cannot use Kate, how about Katelyn? Yes, it's a current name, but that's the spelling a DF went with so that DD could shorten to Kate later in life if she chose.

Also, Anna (or Annabel), Margaret, and Lynn came to mind.

My DD#2 is Sarah, so I'm partial to that one! :)

When you mentioned the 50s and 60s, the first name that came to my mind was Linda. It means "pretty" in Spanish.

I noticed someone mentioned Jane. That is a strong, traditional name. If you prefer, you could go with Janet and call her Jane.

With those Z and S sounds in your last name (I think of a girl I knew in HS whose last name was Zaslow), you may want to stick with something short and simple for a first name. Of course, if your last name is Zeus, a longer name would work just fine!

Someone also mentioned Emma. That is pretty but is also popular right now.

I like the idea of the first name ending with a vowel so that it flows nicely to the Z sound.

Mary or Maria would meet both your criteria (popular in the 50s and very traditional). Annemarie or Marianne also would work.

I kind of like Linda and Maria together. They are not "twinny" but sound nice as a pair. Emma or Clara could be your third name. (But you probably don't want Maria and Clara because of the magazine Marie Claire.)

What Adelle? I love it and it is an older name.

I'm trying to think of names that fit your criteria but also "go" with DS1 and DS2's names. I can't help it! That's just how my mind works, LOL. For example, I'd have a hard time picking a hard "C" name that started with "K" knowing your DS1's name.

Anne or Anna
Abigail
Amelia
Caroline or Carolyn (diff prononciation) - I wanted Caroline but DH nixed it
Cara
Julie or Julia
Eva or Ava
Erin
Charlotte (love this name!)
Alice (I used to babysit for a little girl named Alice and it has carried nicely into adulthood)
Claire/Clara
Nina
Elise or Elisa
Margaret (nn Maggie)
Miranda
Jane (DD2 has a Jane in her preschool class and I love the name, always have)
Cora
Camille / Camile
Cecilia
Margot
Jenna
Stella
Bridget (love this one - we considered it strongly)
Courtney
Lucy
Cathleen
Chelsea
Jillian (DD2 has a friend named Jillian and it's really sweet on her)

Thanks for all of the suggestions!! Funny that many of you mentioned Jane - that is MIL's name and because of issues I've had with her in the past, I refuse to use it as anything more than a middle name (and even that is dubious). I see some of our favorites on these lists, and added a half dozen more for consideration. Fortunately we have a lot of time to work on this!!

My mom had 7 sisters and lots of aunt and so maybe some of their names would fit:

Judy
Marlene (I've always loved this name)
Marilyn
Francis
Norma
Casey
Shirley
Linda
Emilla
Sarah
Verna
Anna
Grace
Augusta

Hope this helps. You've gotten so many good suggestions from pps, I would find it hard to choose just 3!
