Plastic wall corner covers - how do I remove them?

We haven't done any painting on the main floor since we moved in 2 years ago. It needs to be done before I go into a builder white-induced coma. Most of the wall corners have those hideous clear plastic covers on them. It looks like they were applied with an adhesive. One of them was peeled-away in one area & it removed the paint with it. How do I remove these without completely exposing the metal corners & ruining my walls?

If adhesive is used, try heating it up w/ a blowdryer and prying with a flat tool? The wider the better, a 5in1 or a drywall mud tool....
