if a recipe called for canned beans can i use dry instead? is it a 1:1 exchange or do i have too do something special?

You need to cook the dried beans first, but yes, then you can use them 1:1.

what if i put it all in the crockpot-do I have to cook them first? and how would I cook them if I needed to? sorry, I haven't used beans too much until now and I'm trying to expand:)

What is the recipe? Dried beans absorb a LOT of water and need to cook for a long time to get soft. Also, getting rid of the initial cooking water from beans helps to cut down on the gassiness.
I cook up a large pot of beans, then freeze them in smaller portions to have handy for recipes.
I rinse and soak them all night the night before and then rinse/drain and add 1:1.
fyi: Check the date on the dried ones too. I recently used some old ones :duh:, and they NEVER softened up. So frustrating!

so for 1 cup of dry beans how much water do you use? how long does it take to cook? can i freeze them in ziploc bags?
