I'm making another CD. This one is going to be Country songs.

I do have quite a list of old country. This is what my husband and
I prefer. There are a few new country acts that I enjoy. But, it seems
that the new country artists sound more like rock to me and not country.

And Kenny Chesney is not to be spoken as a country artist in our house.
DH says that anyone who thinks his tractor is sexy is definitely NOT a country
guy.

So, what are your favorite country songs?

Have you heard Lady Antebellum? I love them!

Also Darius Rucker (from Hootie and the Blowfish) has a country album out that I really like a few songs from. My favorite is "It won't be like this for long",makes me cry everytime I hear it!

Ann

ETA: I also love George Strait!

"Shamless" sung by Garth Brooks (it was actually written by Billy Joel). It was our wedding song!

the studio version is better, but you can hear it live here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdDD8hSiKZs

I also love Trish Yearwood's "How will i live?" and "There's No Way" by Alabama.

and don't forget Charlie Daniel's "The Devil went down to Georgia"!

edited to add:
"Forever and Ever Amen" by Randy Travis
"Nobody Knows Me" by Lyle Lovett http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjdj58FnXDc
lots of Doug Stone, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Garth Brooks (especially "Papa Loved Mama" and "Rodeo")

Blessed by Martina McBride. More pop-ish, but hands down my favorite song by a country singer. here's a snippet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uUyOCAYT8Y

Seminole wind by John Anderson is a close second http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGoBQIhyFFM

seconding Lady Antebellum and Mary Chapin Carpenter

I liked Trick Pony but I think they broke up

and generally - Alan Jackson, George Strait, Garth, Trisha Yearwood, Randy Travis, Judds, Reba, Pam Tillis and throw in some Toby for kick-a*s

I think you are right in that "new country" has a more rock or top-40 feel to it. I sure was glad to switch from the rap-heavy top 40 to lyric-rich sing-a-long country back in the early 90s.

I love anything by Johnny Cash. Also The Devil went down to Georgia and my FIL just got me into Joe Nichols ~ I really like "That's what love'll get you"

Great suggestions from the PPs, and I'll throw in Josh Turner. He's new-ish, but sounds more old school to me. 'Long Black Train' is a favorite from him. I do also like Buddy Jewell's 'Sweet Southern Comfort'.

If you like Randy Travis, you might also like Josh Turner. He's younger, but has a similar sound.

Although different, DH and I both like Vince Gill. My Kind of Woman/My Kind of Man with Patty Loveless was our first dance song at our wedding. We took a few dance lessons and our instructor was thrilled when we played the song for him. The first thing he said was "It's a classic waltz!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EiLskdHmS8

Also a fan of several others already mentioned - Clint Black, Alan Jackson, Martina, John Anderson, Trisha Yearwood.

Funny you post this. I was going to come here later to see if someone could name a country song for me that I heard the first (and only) time last week.

:yeahthat:

and how could I have forgotten Mary Chapin Carpenter?!?! She's one of my favorites. I think she's classified as "folk" on itunes and that may be why I missed her when I did a quick scan earlier.

I think my husband has a Josh Turner CD. The name sounds familiar.

Oh, and we both love Clint Black. My husband grew up in the same area
of Texas as Clint Black. :)

Would you please share your list with us? I love the old country songs and can't remember so many of them...

A couple more:
Dwight Yoakam - Ain't That Lonely Yet, Fast As You
Mary Chapin Carpenter - He Thinks He'll Keep Her

I loved many Randy Travis, The Judds and Reba McEntire songs.

And for real old school I like Patsy Cline.

I love Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. I first heard their music
while watching "Coal Miner's Daughter" years and years ago.

(And this is when I fell in love with Tommy Lee Jones too! He plays
Loretta Lynn's husband in the movie.)

How about The Judd's ... and do you remember the Foerester Sisters? I loved their song "I fell in love again last night."

Steve Wariner ... The Weekend

Little Texas ... it's all good!

Would love to see your final list ... I miss these older songs.

I really like "I Love the Way You Love Me" by John Michael Montgomery.

I also LOVE "When You Say Nothing at All". It was originally sung
by Keith Whitley.
I prefer the version done by Alison Krauss.

I also like "You Look So Good in Love" by George Strait.

I like this song too. It makes me laugh when my husband is joking around
and he'll sing this song to me. "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On"

I like this one too. Heard it from DH. "King of the Road" by Roger Miller

I love country music from the 60's, 70's and early 80's. Some of my favorites are:

Luchenbach, Texas, by Waylon Jennings
Let your love flow, by the Bellamy Brothers
Redneck Girl by the Bellamy Brothers
Walkin AFter Midnight by Patsy Cline
The songs don't come to mind but I love The Oak Ridge Boys, The Statler brothers, Alabama
Much newer but I love to dance to "My Maria" by Brooks and Dunn
And I really like "Earl" by the Dixie Chicks

DH is from Texas and LOVEs Alternative Country. His favorites are Pat Green, Charlie Robison, Max Sterling, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jack Ingram and Robert Earl Keen. I've heard their songs so many times in the car that I know them by heart. :tongue5:
