talking thomas the train

Is anyone familiar with this? i just bought Cranky the Crane from the talking thomas series and wonder if i need the whole train to go with. i only bought the crane because dd loves the crane but has a hard time turning up and down with ther target train set.

DD doesnt particluarly care for thomas but she likes trains and loves the crane. We have a mix of the Target set and ikea. Do i need the other tracks in order for the crane to talk or just the cars ?

Also is 34.99 a good price for this piece? i got it at AC moore w/coupon.

I beleive for the talking crane and other items, you need the talking trains as well so they can identify each train,. For that reason alone, I never bought any of the talking thomas series- I have too many of the plain old wood ones!
