Not sure where to post this so I thought I would post it in here. I just boiled/steamed some apples and when they were done, I moved the pan over for them to just cool on the stove. When I went back to move them into the mixer, they looked like they have taken on the silver appearence of the steaming pot I just cooked them in. I have never made apples this way and it has me scared. Do apples change colors when you steam/boil them? Should I throw them out and start over and just not let them sit in that pot to long?

I did pears tonight for the first time. They looked fine but I boiled them rather than steaming. Did the apples look oxidized (brown) or silver? What are your pots made of? I know you aren't supposed to cook baby food in aluminum.

I will have to look at what the pan is made of. Never checked. I was to scared so I through out the apples. I will try again tomorrow. Pears are also on my list to make. I know it sounds dumb but how do you boil them? The same way you would potatoes for mashed potatoes?
Alright I went and looked what the steamer pot is made out of and it says stainless steel. I didn't know you weren't supposed to you use aluminum. Where did you hear about that? I would love to read up on it and learn more. As for the pans I bake my DS food in, I don't know what they are made out of.

I'm pretty sure I read the no aluminum in the Super Baby Foods book. The author is a bit over the top, but it seemed like good enough advice to me. I know people on this board worry about aluminum drinking bottles (except Sigg which are lined) so I figure I'll continue to believe it's a bad idea. Also, we don't have any aluminum cookware so it's no skin off my back.
Here's what I did with the pears: I peeled, cored, and cut them into 8ths. Then I just covered them with cold water and boiled them until they were soft. I put the entire pan into the fridge to cool and then blended the pears with a bit of the cooking water. I'm planning on doing the same with apples but I prefer pears, so I thought we would try those first. I really love making baby food so far.
