DS1 is becoming interested in dinosaurs. I have a very basic knowledge of types of dinosaurs. Today, he asked what each dino was called. I had no idea what they were beyond T-Rex and the Stegosaurus. I said it's a red dino and he said "yes, but what is called?" Uh oh. Mom's in trouble. Are there any good books out there that explain types, etc for younger kids? He is very curious and needs a lot of answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My DD had a DK board book that was all about pictures of different types of dinosaurs and their names.

For fun, Jane Yolen writes a "How Do Dinosaurs ... " series and I think that the actual name of the dino in the illustration appears on the same page.

Meet the Dinosaurs- DK Readers Series
IIRC it's a simple, beginner dino book. I think it has photographs for illustrations...don't remember if any are graphic.

Roger Priddy has a few dinosaur books for the young crowd.

There are several dinosaur books written/illustrated by Aliki in the Let's Read and Find Out series. One is My Visit to the Dinosaurs. They're all great. Another favorite is the Magic School Bus in the Time of the Dinosaurs.

Three might be a little young, but I imagine it would hold his interest for a long time. Suggested age is 4-8. He would likely need supervision for a while so as not to destroy the pop-ups. I'm waiting for the day that our little boy shows some interest in dinos so we can get it.

There's a Dr. Seuss, Oh Say Can You Say Dinosaur, which is great because it tells you how to pronounce all the names phonetically. ;)

Bones Bones by Byron Barton (I may be wrong about the title. Maybe Dinosaur Bones...?)

Cute, not a lot of text, but my girls like it.

I agree about the DK books - they have some board books, and some regular books with dinosaur info. Or try your library - then you can find out how much detail he needs/wants to satisfy his curiosity. If he's a really bright kid, the basic 3yo dinosaur books may not cut it for him!

Also my all time favorite book as a child was Danny and the Dinosaur:

We have the DK Eyewitness book(s). I think more than one. You can go into as little or as much detail as you want. I also have the Usborne book.

And this is a fun one for DS1

I second the DK and Usborne suggestions.

There is another Early Reader that I bought from Target. I cannot locate it (DS hid it)...it is also a fave.

Good luck...and welcome to the world of dinosaurs! :) Trust me...you WILL know all of the names soon! Schleich has a great little dinosaur collection at Target...that is where we bought the majority of our dinos and they've held up for 5 years of play...MANY more to come! We have a TON from AC Moore and Michaels.
