View Full Version : Kids music with male performers?

Any suggestions for music CDs/DVDs with male leads?

A friend of mine has a son who is incredibly drawn to music and dance with little interest in playing with boys or playing "typical" boy things. We live in a pretty conservative town (where I think DH and I are the token quasi liberals) and apparently she's been getting a lot of crap from folks about his flamboyant ways. For goodness sake...he's FIVE.

Unfortunately, she's one who listens to other folks more than herself. Especially criticism about her parenting skills. I've managed to talk her down from replacing all of the toys he LIKES (instruments, kitchen, etc.) with toys he doesn't (tractors, trucks, etc) and she's going to try to find male role models in music that he could identify with.

Ironically, her DH is fine with whatever her DS1 wants to do. And, his preschool teachers have told her it's FINE. Her DS2 is in the diagnostic process for a myriad of neurological issues (sensory and apraxia are among them) and now feels like with all of the criticism of DS1 and her DS2s issues, she's "done something to damage them."

Thanks,
Jamelin

And there's always Raffi, who a little girl thought DH was the other day (with his new beard). He wanted to start singing to her, lol.

Barenaked Ladies has a fun children's CD.

I was going to say the Wiggles but they might be a little young for him too.

Thanks for all of the quick replies. I know most of these but was completely having a mommy brain moment I'll pass the list along to her.

Besides They Might Giants my daughter asks for the Beach Boys, which is nice because I can only take so much childrens' music.

ETA: how could I forget the Wiggles?! DD loves them.

Ellis Paul

His kids' album is called The Dragonfly Races and won a Parents' Choice award last year. He's got another one in the works.

Dan Zanes
Justin Roberts (he's super popular in my house!)
"Steve Songs"
Rocknocerous

We just saw Steve Songs perform last week and he was AWESOME. Super fun and engaging. He actually went after the performance and sat in this grassy area while the kids clamoured around him and requested songs, etc. My kids were just singing his songs this morning.

In addition to those already mentioned, my boys like Billy Jonas (no relation to the Jonas Brothers) and Trout Fishing in America.

Most of our favs are mentioned, but here are a few more...
Ziggy Marley - Family Time is our current favorite (went to a taping at XM in NYC- cool!)
Jack Johnson - Curious George Soundtrack - not exactly 'kids' but my kids love it (and so do we)

Recess Monkeys!!!! They are great live too! (My children danced like maniacs for the entire concert and I have never laughed so hard.)
