Transformer type toys for preschoolers?

We were at a friend's the other day and her dc had some toys that looked like transformers, but we simple to do (for preschool aged kids). She couldn't remember what they were called. My girls were really into them - I thought they might be good travel type toys. I will search, but any ideas?

We have some "transforming" vehicles made by Mattel. I don't remember what they were called. We got them at Walmart.

I got my son some Transformers toys at Target. They come in different
levels. I think there are 3-4 different levels. The levels determine how
easy/hard it is to take them apart and put them back together.
