We are looking at 8 passenger vehicles, since baby number 4 is scheduled to arrive in December. It will be very tight in our current vehichle (Mazda MPV). We have narrowed down the choices to the Toyota Sienna and the Honda Odyssey. We are in MA and the sales tax is going up 8/1 (which would save hundreds). There are some rebates now, etc, but a new redesigned Sienna is coming out in January and a new Odyssey as well.

Would you hold off to see what the redisned car looks like or what changes are made or would you buy the car now that meets your needs?

Are the newer models coming out simply the "new year" models? Or are they the complete body redesign models? If they were the body redesign models (typically rolled out every 4-6 years), then I would probably wait to see the new design and additional features. There might be some added features on the new design that could be very useful.

The 2010 has the power tailgate on the touring and the ex-l.

I too am debating. It really depends on how much "redesign" there is. We had a first year Toyota Previa. Which was a radical redesign. So much so, they didn't have the kinks worked out. So we wound up selling the car because replacing the transmission was the price of a new small car! It it is just a body style change, I may wait.

Also there aren't any big specials right now. I am expecting maybe the end of the month, and typically Aug. has better specials.

ETA Rumor is Toyota is doing a big redesign out in Jan, but Honda's redesign will be closer to next fall i.e. 2011 model.

I could swear I just drove a 2010 Sienna last week at a dealership, and there were no big differences/changes. No '10 Odysseys out yet, but inventory is seriously limited, at least where we are on the east coast. Though we'd have a new one this past week, but it was impossible to get it in the color/model I wanted. Also, Honda yanked incentives over a week ago, so hopefully there will be more coming in August.

The 2009 EX-L has the power tailgate also. Just got one. three weeks ago there was a $2500 dealer incentive going on that helped the prices, I think...I hope. My guess is that when the brand new ones are out, there is much less room for negotiation since they are the hot commodity.

Minivans are not going through a lot of redesigning for 2010-2011 model years. Number one reason being, the competition has subsided. Back in the late 90's, there was serious competition in the minivan and midsized SUV market, where as the current auto design & marketing arena has shifted to a more "green" direction. While they are busy greening compact vehicles, less attention will be given to redesigning minivans and midisze SUVs.

Here is a good example. You can get a completely loaded "left over" 2009 model in September almost 30% off the sticker price (and if you're at the right place at the right time, the savings will be much more), or get a 2010 base model with a higher ticket price than the loaded 2009 because they added an inch of shiny chrome trim on the hood and completely redesigned the cupholders, so now your grande cup of starbucks will look even cuter from where you're sitting...

Unless they have redesigned the power train or the engine or added a "must have" safety feature to the new year's model, there is absolutely no reason to buy the new one. You can save anywhere from $3000 to $8000 by choosing a year end model - given the two vehicles you are talking about...

You can compare vehicles on all kinds of websites from cars.com to vehix, or even the manufacturers' own websites allow you to compare the models from 2 different years. Just go with the brand new year end model and save your cash.

You did, they haven't really changed from the 09s. They are trying do get the 11s or a 10.5 out early to beat Honda.

According to my DH, who has done lots of research about this- originally the 2010 Siennas and Odysseys were supposed to have new designs. However, there are so many left-over 2009's that never even made it to dealer lots that Honda and Toyota decided to pull those 2009's and re-VIN them as 2010s. So the 2010 Sienna and Odyssey will be exactly the same as the 2009 with no changes. The new design will come out in 2011 instead (although it might actually be made available a little earlier)
