I can't be the only one getting ready for school to start in August. I am trying to get all the supplies out. Figured it would be a good time to start a thread for backpack and lunchbox recommendations!!! What has worked for you???

So far my favorite backpacks have been LL Bean's Original Bookpack (comes in Jr., Original, Original Plus and Deluxe sizes, as well as wheeled). The print fabrics tend to be easier to zipper imo. The kids have used these, and I have been using a wheeled one for 4 years that still looks great!

Lunch boxes, I also like LL Beans. http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?categoryId=62784&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&from=SR&feat=sr Lands End has a couple great ones too, with carabiners to clip them onto their bacpacks. The lunch sack is a simple one that works well. http://www.landsend.com/pp/LunchSack~186764_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::PRO&CM_MERCH=IDX_00003__0000000388&origin=index Last year I found that a simple canvas sack that dc had decorated and had some velcro at the top worked the best. Why? I could throw it in the wash, which is much needed at our house, lol. Also it was inexpensive. It doesn't insulate anything though.

Oh- one last tip. Late August LLBean's outlets often have sales on personalized returns. They are often reduced to begin with and then often half off that. You probably won't come up with the right name, but you can easily sew a patch over top. So if you are on a really tight budget that might work. ;-)

I got DS the Lands End Classmate Junior Backpack. He starts pre-K in Sept, and it should still be fine for K. DS is a small 4 yo, 35lbs and 40", it's a little big on him, but not as big as other backpacks. I wanted room for his lunch and sweater in the main compartment. The front part will hold a folder and then there's a small pocket on the front to put his lovey. And 2 side holders for a water bottle. Most days I will carry his lunch bag (LLBean Critter), but there will be times it has to fit in the backpack.

It's on sale http://www.landsend.com/pp/ClassicClassMateJuniorBackpack~146384_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::GAR&CM_MERCH=IDX_00005__0000001303&origin=index

We have the preschool backpacks from LE, but they've replaced them with the tiny take (http://www.landsend.com/pp/ClassMateTinyTakeBackpack~198921_-1.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::MWD&CM_MERCH=IDX_00003__0000000389&origin=index) which I have not seen IRL.

But, I'd asked about how well the Laptop Lunch fits inside the SmallHaul deluxe lunchbox (http://www.landsend.com/pp/ClassMateSmallHaulDeluxeLunchSack-53040_198919_-1.html?CM_MERCH=PGGT_2_from_0000040415_to_00000396 02) and it does, but it's a little tight for a preschooler to zip up on their own. There's just not quite enough wiggle room. For an older child with more dexterity, it would be fine. My DD had no trouble getting the laptop lunch in/out of the StudyHaul lunchbox (http://www.landsend.com/pp/ClassMateStudyHaulLunchBox-53040_198916_-1.html?CM_MERCH=PGGT_3_from_0000040415_to_00000119 04) much easier. The drink holder seemed tight for her, but she was able to zip her Munchkin straw cup inside the front pouch with no problem.

I like that they offer monogramming, and you can call and get the thread to be any color you'd like. At LE, they're all $5 off for a couple more days.

DS has had an LLBean backpack for 3 years now. He's starting K in the fall and I decided to get him a new one. The old one is still functional, but a bit worn looking. This time I ordered LE. So, so, so much easier to zip. The LLBean one was always getting the zipper stuck on the material that covers the zipper. Even I have had trouble with it. The LE doesn't have the extra material there so there is nothing to get stuck. Yay! I also ordered their larger lunch bag, which clips on to the outside of the backpack quite nicely. It will very easily hold the Laptop Lunch and has a cup holder on the outside for DS' Kleen Kanteen.

LL Bean Jr. and original lunchbox. Bought both at the beginning of K and he is about to go into 2nd grade. They look brand new and are great.

I just bought the LE Small Haul for DS1 for K. I looked at the dimensions and compared them to ones at Target and it looks like it will be plenty big enough for K and even 1st grade. He picked out a Crocodile Creek lunchbox and I'm heading to Meijer tomorrow to find containers for it. BTW - Target has sandwich boxes in the dollar spot. :)

ETA: The LE one was only $21 with tax and free ship. Target started at $14.99 for non-character packs, so I figured this was worth the difference. :) The CC lunchboxes were $15 at WF, where the Target ones were $10 and very boring.
