Is it too early to buy some coloring stuff for 13month old DS. Not sure if I can do crayons etc since he will put them in his mouth and also he probabaly won't be able to hold them properly. Is there anything for toddlers this age. Finger paints? (still worried abt him putting it in his mouth). Any suggestions?

Thanks much

Do a dot markers are really good for that age. DS also used the big washable Crayola crayons but I think he was about 18 months before I let him use it. Whatever you use, make sure the paint/crayon is washable.

You might want to try the paint with water books and let your DS do it with a little wet sponge (easier to hold than a paint brush).

When I worked in early intervention, I believe the evaluations started looking for "marks paper with crayon" around 12-13 months. When DS was small I'd spread out a huge piece of paper (like the roll style of blank paper), plop him on it, and let him draw w/ a fat crayon. Stockmar stick or block crayons are durable and made of natural beeswax ($$ but they last).

I highly recommend getting Young At Art by Susan Striker from the library.

We did (jumbo) crayons , finger paint in the bath tub (then just fill and wash baby) , water colors with a japanese water-brush (big cakes and the biggest brush Michael's had). I am sure there was more but I can't remember....

Occasionally DD put the crayon in her mouth at that age--they don't taste good so between reinforcement not to and the taste it didn't last long.

And there is a recipe for edible finger paint in the book I mentioned but you could probably find it googling.

They are hard to find B&M IME. I have a waldorf school nearby and they have a small store as part of the school, and it is open to the public. I can buy individual crayons, or the sets there.

Many of the Waldorf retailers carry them online. THey are expensive, but honestly, we still have some that I bought DS when he was an infant (and he's now 5.5). Of course, both he and my 2.5 year old prefer markers anyway, sigh.

Oh the colors are very rich, smooth and very vibrant. They smell great, last a long, long time, and don't use petroleum-based ingredients. Not worth it for everyone, but they do last and are very nice.

I've never seen them at AC Moore in my area. (eta: it would be great if they carried them and you could use a coupon though!! I wonder if anyone else has seen them at AC Moore? )
