This is why we decided to send DS to a private school that has a developmental philosophy. At the visit, the K teacher was asked about reading, she said that as an adult no one asks if you were reading in pre-K, K, or grade 1. Kids learn to read when they are ready and they will encourage them, but they won't force reading if a child doesn't show signs of being ready.

I feel very lucky that we can afford to send DS to this school, and also sad that our public K is stressful for kids, teachers and parents. They're 5 years old for crying out loud.
