I am looking at these sets for possible add-ons to our unit blocks. And I know know little about Haba blocks except for a tiny set of colored blocks we have.

Are the comparable in size or a much smaller scale?

Should I just stick to unit blocks (hoping I can find some used on craigslist or something, since they seem to run to much more $$ for unique pieces)

As a former math teacher, you would think I could answer my own question-- I only remember the unit in college about the importance and uses for unit blocks--I don't specifically remember if it is considered a faux pas to mix with out types of sets.

Also we have lots of other building sets--if that makes a difference to the answer (legos, duplos, tree blocks, wooden lego type blocks, magnetiles). But DD is a big builder, always has been. She likes to keep each style together--she may make a city with a building of each type but no intermixing. So I am not sure if they are too different if she will want to keep them separate. (and my goal here is to give her more to build with the unit blocks since she often runs out when building with them)

ETA-- I found this on a website that sells HABA blocks

The basic block unit (smallest dimension) is 40mm, slightly larger than a unit block, which has a basic unit of 1 3/8" or 34.93mm.

Sooo... now my real question is---okay to mix with unit blocks or does the importance of the proportional sizing fly right out the window...

Honestly, the kids couldn't care less. Buy what you like and mix away.

My kids don't mix thier blocks either. I think having them be different scales would be frustrating later on.
