So, DD was playing at a house that had about 15 american girl dolls, boxes of accessories, and OMG, the biggest man room DH ever saw.. anyway, thaaat was only their summer house!! haha... but it was sooo funny when Lily saw the dolls, she was shivering with excitement-- she went aroudn and touched the hair on all of them, and we realized what a perfect thing to start looking for for her-- but where do i begin?? AG dolls are amazing, but not good for my 2.5 year old i think... what else should i start looking for for Christmas?? any good suggestions??

:)

Gotz!

Phthalate free too (which AG is not). Gotz used to make the AG dolls back in the day.

DD has a gotz maxy muffin:

amazon has several styles (can't find ours there either)

Ours isn't on there, but she's super cute. Cute outfit, straightish hair w/ pigtails and bangs. Comes w/ a brush. The hair totally gets raggedy with a young child playing, but I can redo the Gotz doll hair pretty often and it turns out looking great again. They have pretty nicely rooted hair that holds up to brushing. The curlier hairstyles will likely be harder to keep looking nice IMO.

eta: they also have a thirteen inch size (a little smaller and slightly less expensive) that has hair.

I have a Gotz precious day doll (would fit in AG clothing, etc. eventually) put away but I think I'm going to wait another year or two at least. I've heard older girls really appreciate the AG-size/style of dolls much better.

I really love the Corolle dolls. If you want to go with AG, you could get the Bitty Twins -- maybe find another mom and split the order (AFAIK, they won't sell them individually). The BT can wear any of the AG baby clothes too, not just the twins clothes -- they are basically the babies with hair.

grandma gave my girls the bitty twins when they turned 3. They are very cute. (my girls aren't into them, but they aren't really into any dolls. They love strollers and such, but only for stuffed animals).

I have seen tons of Gotz dolls at Tuesday Morning. I don't know if they are the styles mentioned above, but I always see some there.

I also agree with pp, that Corolle makes really cute dolls!

I would suggest Gotz as well... And I would suggest looking at Tuesday Morning. (we got DD's muffin there). I have recently seen the ones there with hair, but ymmv as always with TM.

I know our store had this one recently... and iirc she was about $18.

Another recommendation for Gotz dolls. They also have play dolls that are similar in size and appearance to the AG dolls. The hair is much easier to manage though. They also have ones that are kind of in between a baby doll and an AG doll. Here is a sweet one...

Live & Learn has really great descriptions of the eyes, skin and hair of the various Corolle dolls too: http://www.liveandlearn.com/corolle/
