I bought a Magnext set for my DS's birthday, who will be 5. It seems like a building set he'd enjoy. After I bought it, I realized that it is the revised version of Magnetix, which was recalled due to death and injuries from the magnets being swallowed. Supposedly the new Magnext sets have been tested and are safe. But if you read about the original version, there were quite a few cases. Scary.

We haven't opened it yet so I'm not sure what the pieces actually look like. We do have DD, who is 2 and another younger sib on the way. As best as we could try to keep the Magnext pieces together and in DS's room for only him to play, pieces do get misplaced.

Any thoughts out there about the safety of this toy?

With a 2 yr old around, I wouldn't do it. I would either put it away for a year and then bring it out, or return it - or put it in the gift pile for an older kid w/o younger sibs.

:yeahthat:
when DS was 9 he had a brand that wasn't recalled - and while they were played with intensely, the moment DS2 could move around to get anything in his mouth they were put away!

I wouldn't, but that's because DS2 puts everything in his mouth. Just part of lowering the risk, kwim?, so you might want to put it away (or regift and buy in a few years).

DS1 had these last year in his preschool classroom (3's) and LOVED them. I considered buying a set but decided with younger sibs that it was better to let them stay at school.

I have been given SOOO many of these sets and sadly they all live in the very top of my closet waiting for DD to be way bigger. I am just too nervous about them. I have also regifted them as much as possible when the youngest in the receiving family is about 5+, but for my family they are a real no-go.

Just ask your Pediatrician (or ER surgeon) what they think of these toys and you will probably have your answer. Mine flipped out when I mentioned it - a definite NO in our house.

Thank you, Ladies. You've confirmed my gut feeling We'll be avoiding this toy. There are plenty of building sets out there.
