View Full Version : What can I buy from TRU/ BRU that's not MIC?

I'm looking for a first birthday gift for a little boy, and I'd like to spend no more than $25. I was hoping to use a $5 off $25 coupon at BRU/ TRU, but I'm wondering what they carry that's not made in China. I'd like toys, books, &/or games, but I'd like something as multi-purpose/ non-trendy as possible, as his parents aren't materialistic and have very few toys for the kid. I was thinking of the M&D music in a box set, but think it may be MIC as well. Or Target? Same price range..
Otherwise, is there something I can get from Amazon (free shipping would be nice!) that is in that price and age range, that's not plastic, electronic, and is more timeless but also interesting for a little boy? He's quite a mover, but I'm not around him enough to know what his other interests are ;).
I've thought of making play silks, but I'm not sure if they'd get used/ if he & his parents would give them a chance and try them out.

Thanks for your help!

M&D is usually MIC. The nice wooden toys I've seen not made in China are above your budget of $25 (usually made in Europe). You might want to opt for books (though many of those are now printed in China, too!). Are you trying to support USA-made products or just concerned about the safety of stuff MIC? If it's the latter, then books should be ok but if it's the former, you might try Etsy.com (it's an on-line marketplace for homemade stuff!) as lots of Americans are making toys on there and you can likely support a WAHM that way.

I don't think you'll find much in those stores that isn't MIC. My son has this and still plays with it at 21 months. It's a perfect gift for a 1 year old, we're getting 2 for some birthdays coming up for friends.

For a one year old, what about a ring stacker from Holgate toys, which is made in the USA? I have no personal experience with them but have always liked the look of their ring stacker and it is pretty close to your budget (with shipping), and a nice classic toy (IMO).

I went to that site and saw the section of Mr. Rogers toys ... now I want my very own Trolley!
