Have the huge, expensive dslr and now need a little digital camera to take to beach, brief outings, etc. Want excellent picture quality.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I am a fan of Sony cameras and my little P&S is a DSC-W120 (last years model). The new version is the DSC-W220 (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cybershot-DSC-W220-Digital-Stabilization/dp/B001O9ARD6/ref=sr_ob_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254151846&sr=8-1). Compact, great pics, easy to use, and under $200.

We love our Canon Elph - it is small and compact (easily fits into a pocket/purse), has great picture quality (I think for $200 you can get 10Mpixels now - ours is 7.1 which is plenty) and has a rechargeable battery.
We've had a Sony and a Nikon in the past, and the Canon wins hands down.

I have a small little Kodak, (c813). I like it. we got it so when I finally get my dslr my DH has a camera he's comfortable with. It takes decent pictures and video. I'd prefer something with a little bit more telephoto but it works. I personally don't like the software that comes with the camera but it interfaces with the computer beautifully without it. It takes SD cards if you take lots of pictures. DH took it with him to DC when DS#1 went on a school trip. It took beautiful pictures inside several of the museums with the museum feature.

I also have a Insignia. It's okay. You have to change the battery settings if you use anything other then old fashion alkalines. Otherwise it eats batteries nearly daily. I bought it as a dang I can't find my camera or "here DC stop pestering me about taking pictures". I have had to tape the battery cover on. and it sometimes has trouble interfacing with the computer but that's why I bought a SD card for it. But it was cheap and it's not my main camera.

there is a Canon powershot that was on sale for around 180 (@ best buy) that seems to get good reviews. I have an SD550 (from a few years ago) that we still use when we don't want to lug the SLR... it's a great little camera!

My 8 year old loves taking pictures and his grandma and aunty said they would get him his own digital camera.... I am steering them towards this Canon. Looks like it's back up to $200 ... they have 4 different colors I believe

Great! That is the one I just purchased. I was worried you were going to link to an entirely different camera.

where did you get it? I wanted to order one from Costco, but Costco.com only has the grey in stock :(

I wanted to get it from a place with great customer service.

I just ordered from Amazon. Not great customer service but a thirty day return policy, which is the best you can hope for other than Costco these days. :)

I do love costco for electronics, maybe the bricks and mortar store has the colors in stock?
