Toyota is recalling 3.8 million vehicles made between 2007 and 2009 because floor mats on the driver's side could cause the accelerator to stick.

"For now, the automaker and federal officials are urging owners to simply remove their driver’s side mat while Toyota works out a solution."

This happened to my mom 2 months ago in her 2008 Avalon! She was terrified as she had just entered the freeway during rush hour and the accelerator got stuck. She almost hit a few cars but was able to swerve to the side of the freeway and yank on the emergency brake and stomp on the brakes to stop. The dealership blamed her car mat, as she had the original factory ones underneath her weatherproof ones. We thought maybe it was too high because of that but it sounds like others are having the same acceleration issue even with just the factory mat!

I've heard stories of it being just the factory mat, but couldn't get enough details to conclude that was the actual problems.

But yeah, people stacking the mats is typically the problem.

Still, not everyone has double mats. I dunno what this recall is supposed to do. I'm waiting for my official notice as to what to do.

I think that this is a danger in any car. You also have to be careful that it doesn't get stuck behind the brake pedal.

I am wondering if the only reason the Corollas are not included is because the floor mats are not standard.

This is sad. The officer and his family were near my house when this happened. Prayers for his entire family.
