I'm in shock. My dad has cancer. Desperately need p and pt....

I just got off the phone with my dad. He has bladder cancer. I'm very, very close to my dad. I just idolize him. He is just a great man- very fair, just, friendly, outgoing, and would help anyone in need. He has a huge heart. I"m in shock and am not sure I"m even making sense. All he knows is that he has a tumor in his bladder about 1 inch in diameter. He has surgery in 2 weeks and the doctors will know more then. I just lost my mom 4 years ago. I can't lose my dad too. I'm just not strong enough. And he lives alone. Can you imagine what he must be going through? Of course he won't tell me. He says he's optomistic but he'll always put up a brave front for us kids.

And of course tonight, DH is out of town. My dad is a pretty private person so I can't really call our other family members until he says it's ok. So, I have no one to talk to about this. Normally I'd go to church and pray to find some peace about this but I can't leave the kids alone, obviously.

I really need your prayers and positive thoughts. They are all very, very much appreciated.

You can and you will get through this. I lost my mom at 5, and my dad at 29. It sucks. When you find the stage of the CA, etc. you will better be prepared to deal with this. Lots and lots and lots of hugs to you (and your Dad). Parents tend to keep things to theirselves in order to "protect" us. I didn't even know that my Mom had skin cancer until my Dad let it slip. I hope you are able to talk to him soon and really, really talk.

Sending lots of positive thoughts! Also, you can check in with the docs on this board, but bladder cancer that has not spread to other organs is not the worst cancer to have in my opinion. It is a non-vital organ - - so that means there are lots of options for removing the tumor, even removing the entire bladder if needed. That gives his docs alot to work with.

My dad was diagnosed w/bladder cancer last year. I know how shocking it is. Fortunately it was caught early & he been getting BCG vaccines into his bladder w/good results. Bladder cancer is usually responsive to treatment depending on the stage of course.

I hope you find some way to handle the fears and emotions you must be feeling right now. While I know you said he is a private person, if you need to talk to someone you need to talk to someone. Maybe a counselor or someone else that would not be part of the family would be a good idea if he does not want others to know.
