Can a 4 year old, 42 lbs, be in a booster? Or do they need a car seat?

We're going to AZ in November and I'm hoping to use the CARES restraint and check a booster. Right now we have a general high back booster using the 3point belt.

I have to look into the car seat/booster seat rentals.

I also have to look more into the CARES restraint for the plane.

Thanks!

Yes, it's legal. And as long as you are vigilant that it's used properly (belts routed in belt guides properly, lapbelt low on lap, shoulderbelt touching chest and on the collarbone, somewhat on the side of the neck), it's safe, too. Never rent a seat. It costs more than buying a cheap one, and it's history is unknown (has it been in a crash, is it filthy beyond belief? rental companies are known for even not having them on hand despite being reserved).
Not sure I'd worry about the CARES, either... 4 yo's fit fine in the airplane belt and the height limit is kind of low, 40 or 44 inches, IIRC.
What general booster do you mean? I'm a brand hound, gotta know for sure (to tell you various details to check for with regard to proper fit and use :))
