View Full Version : Earliest age for a pillow?

Dd is 14+ months now. She STILL does not sleep well in her crib. When in our bed or even playing on the sofa, she always finds a pillow to rest her head on. She sleeps so much better that way. In her crib, she often sleeps with both hands up underneath her head.

When can we add a small "toddler" pillow to her crib???

In Baby 411 they say it's fine to use an airline travel-sized pillow in the crib after 12 months of age.

I think we intro'd a toddler pillow (NOT a full-sized pillow) at 15 or 16 months.

IIRC, it was around 18m.

We waited till ds1 was like 3yo and out of the crib. But, ds2 got a pillow before 12m b/c it helped him when he had a cold and I was looking to earn bad mom of the year. ;)

DD is 16m and exactly the same. I am going to introduce a pillow, and if that doesn't work, I may upgrade to a different mattress, perhaps foam.

Our son was sleeping with a small pillow from the time he was 6 months. When we picked him up in Ethiopia we noticed most of the cribs had pillows in them.

He got a small travel size pillow around 12 months - when he started using his blankets as pillows!

I dont know if this is any better than a pillow, but DD sleeps with the bottom part of a sleep positioner- those side pillows are removed. Like this one- http://www.amazon.com/Sassy-Ultimate-Sleep-Positioner-White/dp/B000C4PXTM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1256744759&sr=1-3

Oh good! Hope it helps. Just for the record, DD *falls asleep* on that pillow, but is nowhere near it in the morning! :)

DS and DD both used pillows basically from birth. Really flat ones hand made by my MIL, but they did.

DD is almost 2 months now, we noticed she sleeps a lot better on our pillows. Granted, her whole body is lying on the pillow, but she goes 3 hours now instead of 1-2 on her crib mattress. On our personal mattress too. Both kids seem to be able to tell the nicer mattresses from the cheaper ones. I wouldn't sleep well on the crap they use in cribs either.

DS has been sleeping with a full size pillow off our bed since right before 12 months. We were lucky if he made it a couple hours at night and naps weren't so great either. One day I put a pillow in there for some reason and napped for 3 hours, i thought it was a fluke so I left it in there for the night and he didn't wake up once. However i got no sleep that night constantly checking on him but he has been fine every time! It's still in there but he's not really using it anymore, i tried to take it out and he slept terrible again so I just leave it there, must be comforting to him. (btw we co-slept for like 8 months)
