Hi all,

I would like to get some recommendations for good toys for newborn to 6 months old baby. I am particularly interested with toys that can help in brain development. Thanks!

Look for things with black and white patterns, simple ones. They especially like simple faces. The high contrast is important when they are younger- skip the pastels and such.

Simple cause and effect toys are good.

The main toy I would buy is a playmat with toys that hang down from the top, and a mirror at baby's level. You can often find these for a good price at consignment stores.

Toys that crinkle or have different textures are good at that age.

This is one toy that I always really liked for my boys:

All play boosts brain development. They learn from everything they do so don't rule out toys that don't appear to have a purpose. They can learn, for example, that Link-A-Doos don't taste as good as what you are feeding them. Everything is new and valuable. Just interact with them by talking, singing and just being there- that's what babies this age thrive on best. Most times toys just get ignored. :)

We had a Tiny Love playmat
Things she could put in her mouth- it was all about the mouth
Textures (Lamaze toys)
Mirrors
Soft books (Lamaze and others- that have different fabrics, textures, sounds)
Leapfrog Counting pal- colors, numbers, 2 types of music
Leapfrog Learning Table- cause and effect- if I do this.... then this happens..... exploring

My son is 4 1/2 months old and really likes his Winkel toy. It's super easy for him to grab any which way and he can put it in his mouth easily.

We also have a playmat that he likes playing on and I've added a separate kick chime toy and some other pull toy that vibrates when he pulls on it.

He also likes his wooden Haba toys that he can grasp easily.

My DS loved the Baby Whoozit Manhatten toy at that age and he still loves to play with it, esp. while in the carseat.

There's a baby whoozit and a bigger whoozit (for about $20).

At that age, my son had two favorites. A Sassy mirror I set down (leaning against the couch) where he could see himself in it when he turned his head. And an orange Lamaze octopus I'd set at the edge of the blanket on the floor. He liked it when we squeezed the legs to make noises. But he seemed to enjoy looking at it even when it was sitting there. It was absolutely thrilling to me.

At the end of that time period, when he was on his back more, we ended up picking up a Fisher Price item that went around him so we could hang toys above him to look at/bat at. Etc.
