I've spent hours pouring over plans details at www.ehealthinsurance.com (http://www.ehealthinsurance.com), I read Consumer Reports article on how to chose a good plan and relevant posts on this forum. I check with MIL who had way more experience with health insurance plans than I do. I go over various options with DH and fill out what feels like a five page form online and apply for coverage. It's not cheap and coverage is not that great but will do while I am looking for a job. And than I get a letter from the insurance company.

HealthNet wants DS and I to get physicals since we have been living out of the country durind the preceeding 6 months. Just great! So now I have a choice of either paying for these out of pocket at rack(et) rates or applying for coverage with another provider. Back to square one. And I am not liking the available options. Not at all. I just keep hoping that we don't get sick before we get coverage. This time I will also be applying for a short-term coverage just to be on the safer side.

Health insurance sucks! I went around and around trying to figure out a better option for us and gave up. Our rates have gone up AGAIN and now DH is pushing me to try and figure out something else. It is so frustrating... the prices rise and the coverage gets crappier! Good Luck!

Even when you have Employer (partly)provide insurance, it's still this sort of crap.
We just got rates for next year. The rate went up about 35% and the deductables increased by about 40%.

Yup, it sucks. I had to find my own coverage for after the divorce was finalized since I'm not working yet. I was able to find relatively reasonable rates, but the coverage kind of stinks. My choices were to get a plan that was never ever going to cover more than 80% of my costs or to get a high-deductible plan that doesn't kick in until I've spent thousands of dollars. Blech. I'm just praying that I stay healthy until I'm back in the workforce and (hopefully) have decent insurance again...

You are in the Bay Area right? I have a number of family members and friends who are members of Kaiser and are very happy. Some of them live in the bay area too. We were members when we were up north too and I liked it more there than I do here, but it's the most reasonably priced option for us so we have stuck with it. I had to be referred to some specialists learlier this year in LA to deal with my D&E surgery and Kaiser covered everything. No questions asked and no billing matters to get mad over. I was very happy.
