After having seen some very disturbing car crash pics, I want to find out.

I like the IIHS rating tool... http://www.iihs.org/ratings/default.aspx

www.informedforlife.org (http://www.informedforlife.org) has a nice summary with various tests (NHTSA, IIHS, etc.) all on one page. The overall score can be helpful as well, though some people disagree, but even without it there is quite a bit of good information.

The ratings diverge a lot so now I am all .

The NHTSA and IIHS crash tests are very different, so what scores well on one may or may not score well on the other.

Is one set of tests more reliable than the other?

The IIHS ones are stricter. It's easier to get high ratings in the NHTSA testing and harder to get high ratings in the IIHS testing (they have to pay for the damages and injuries, so they have a pretty high stake in cars being safer...NHTSA's more of a bare minimum standard).

This what I got for my car.

So I need not worry?

The ratings look good. The problem with most SUV's or crossovers, the X5 included, is in tests that factor in rollover risk you lose points - the layman's way of putting it. With stability control and all the latest safety features on a 2009 model, I would bet and it looks like the test agrees you are in a pretty safe vehicle. The weight of the car makes a big difference too, and you are in a heavy car. Be careful, drive defensively and make sure your car seats are installed and used correctly! :)

Thanks so much. We have an 05 though.
