DD has a lot of knit clothes this year and the static in the dryer has been terrible. I just pulled out one pair of pants and it had 2 socks and reusable tissue stuck to them.

SO without dryer sheets how do you combat static cling? Wool dryer balls? UP the amount of vinegar in the wash?

Have you tried those rubber dryer balls? They are nubby, so don't know if they would cause a lot of pilling on the the knit. I used them for DS's clothes when he was little.

I've wondered about this myself. I found the below on this website:

For those who don’t want to give up the benefits of fabric softeners but are afraid to risk exposure to potentially toxic chemicals, National Geographic’s Green Guide recommends adding either a quarter cup of baking soda or a quarter cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle. Either one will soften clothes, while the latter will also address static cling. (Be sure not to mix either with bleach, though, as resulting chemical reactions could cause noxious fumes.)

I just bought these chemical free dryer sheets from Seventh Generation and they seem to work as well as Bounce (we were using Bounce Free):

When we lived in MI, the winter air was so dry that DS's fleece jammies got horrible static. Air drying them and skipping the dryer completely seemed to help.

i use vinegar as a fabric softener in the washer. i think i remember reading that it also cuts static in the dryer. fwiw, i haven't had a problem with static since the boys have been born and i started with the vinegar. fleece may be an exception, but not unbearable. hth.
