Are you looking specifically for a quilt, or would a comforter work? I just bought DS a twin size solid red duvet cover at Ikea for $14.99. The quilt on his bed is patchwork stripes but it isn't warm enough for winter, so we pull this up over the quilt. The full size was just a few dollars more.

They had a huge selection of comforters to go in them in various price ranges. I picked one of the warmest for DS because we keep the house cool at night and it was $40ish. I bought the same comforter with a different cover for our guest room.

I bought a nice comforter for Ds's bed at Kohls. Company Kids has great quilts, nice basic colors.

I don't know that I have ever seen a solid-color quilt. Quilts usually are valued because of their use of various patterns and colors.

Comforters, OTOH, do often come in beautiful solids.

I just saw some really pretty quilts in the Garnet Hill catalog.

But I have never seen a solid color quilt. Maybe buy your son
a comforter?

Bed, Bath and Beyond often has solid colored quilts. Not sure of the price, but there's always a 20% coupon floating around.

Hmm, no I didn't want a comforter, because I wanted something machine washable. I guess some comforters are, but I don't know if I've ever owned one that washed well. Those matelasse coverlets often come in solids - I guess I thought I could find a solid quilt (or maybe I'm using the wrong word) Maybe I will have to go with a duvet?

Have you tried Etsy? http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_query=quilt&order=date_desc&ship_to=&filter? I'm sure you could find someone to do a solid quilt here and perhaps work out a deal.

They had solid quilt/coverlet things at Target, but not sure of the colors:

I have bought quilts at Marshalls and TJMaxx as well. And I hate things on the bed that I can't wash easily. This becomes a problem in the winter. I have this down blanket, it washes well in our machine, and you could easily use it with a duvet cover:

It is not dry-clean, it is machine-washable. It is pretty warm too!
