View Full Version : S/O --> Addiction to the sippy.

And to be fair, it's my addition, not DS's. DS is, um ... he's 5. He still uses a sippy. He doens't need the sippy, but I'm lazy. When we're at the table, he uses a regular cup. When we're in restaurants, he uses whatever the rest of us are using, usually a covered straw cup. At home, tho, we're often drinking on the couch or drinking in the car, and I default to the sippy.

I've purposely let the take and toss sippies reduce thru attrition; when it's time to toss them, I don't buy new ones. And the toss part is the lid, really, cuz the cups last millennia. The tops, tho? We're down to THREE.

Please point me to a straw cup that isn't going to give him a headache trying to suck the liquid thru (hate those Munchkin things) that will properly wean ME from the sippy

Couldn't you do a sports cap...like a Klean Kanteen with a sports cap? More versatile, still minimizes mess, more age appropriate?

I would just go cold turkey. That is what DD#1's speech therapist had us do over a year ago.

This is what we use for DS. EXCEPT for milk. He climbs in bed with us in the morning and I get a sippy of milk for him. We then stay in bed for 20 mins or so. I'm OK with the one sippy for milk. The rest of the day, it's cups or the klean kanteen.

My concern is that spills will happen on the couch and in the car. Our lifestyle dictates that alot of eating, drinking, and living happen on the couch and in the car. It just is what it is. I make a real effort to have as many meals at the table as possible, but several a week (plus snacks) are on the couch (or int he car). Sippies eliminate the spills. So, this is really *my* addicition to the sippy, not his. He'd probalby be perfectly happy with a sports canteen thingie, especially from Disney Store, maybe. I think I'll look into that.

Anyone else?

These are great straw cups--I bought a pair at Target for chocolate milk. They don't leak!!! I think they ran about $5-6 for two. They also have an insulated version.

Other than water, no other beverage is consumed when not sitting at a table. At least when I'm in charge. DH, OTOH, well, you know where that is going....

Could you talk to him and tell him you want to move to a big boy cup. He can drink milk/juice from a regular cup (I like the Ikea ones) at the table/island. Maybe buy him a couple of Klean Kanteens or ??? for water in the family room/couch and car??

We do mostly water, so I never worry about spills in the living room or car. No biggie with water. If my kids wanted something other than water, I'd tell them to stay in the kitchen or our foyer (right next to our living room) where cleanup is manageable (eta: hard floors in those rooms).

We use the sports top KKs in the car because both kids freak out if their shirts get wet while we're driving :rolleye0014: and I can't deal with the screaming. They've both used open cups at home before turning 1.

These do look good! But do you have to suck till your forehead caves in, or is it an easy suck?

How about the Contigo cups that are currently at Costco? http://www.gocontigo.com/catalog;catalog,products,c6ccbdce42d4fe4dd24ef3f0c 47b2ced.html

I'm still stuck on the playtex quick-straw cups here. DD is 5.5yo.

Ooh, I like that Contigo. Only last time I got cups at Costco, I got stuck with the Munchkins from hell. but these look good, thank you!

The platex problem is that i'm terrible at washing things immediately, and the inside part of the straw I just never trust isn't residue-y, then I worry they're gonna melt in the dishwasher. I have two old platex's. Not sure where the straws are. should maybe think about those ...

DS1 says it is "easy" but actually this is even easier (also from Target and BPA free as well)

I was just going to suggest Contigo. DS1 and DS2 actually have no problem using the adult SS ones so I didn't get the kid ones. I figure we can use these for a long time to come. ETA: I really like that they are more like drinking from an open cup and less like a sippy. Straw cups are OK, we like the Funtainers, but they will leak if not closed and a pain to clean.

We do Klean Kanteens with sports tops for car/couch/bedroom drinking. They leak, but only a little. I still do a sippy top at night for his water because he likes to take the cup into bed with him and the sports tops do leak.

Lots of Funtainers in this house, for kids of all ages :). Only water is allowed in them, though. If the kids want to drink anything else, it is basically in a regular cup (sometimes Leah still gets a sippy top, basically a take n toss, that's not leakproof), and it MUST be in the kitchen. Life is just cleaner that way :)
