I have a friend who started her own business. She needs a small loan to expand her business, just $1500. She needs to join two professional organizations, get a new laptop, and get liability insurance in order to embark on the next phase of her business plan. Her business is making money and meeting expenses and her living expenses.

Are there any resources for women starting a business to get loans or grants? She had a (personal) bankruptcy in 2003 and her FICO score is not great, so traditional bank loans are not working out for her. The business is just two and a half years old. She has pulled herself up from nothing and is self-sufficient for the first time in her life and is frustrated at this stumbling block. She has no family in a position to help her or co-sign.

Small Business Association turned her down due to the bankruptcy.

what other resources should she explore? Where can she find out about micro-loans? What about peer-to-peer loans, is that possible? Are there non-profits that will give grants or loans to women-owned business start-ups? How would she find them?

any other ideas? It seems like it shouldn't be so hard to put such a small amount of money in her hands when her business is already profitable.

Hi Karen,

Try these resources to find microlenders:
http://www.opportunityfinance.net/industry/industry_locator.asp

http://www.natfed.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=833

Most CDCs and other microlenders work in specific areas-- some statewide, others at the regional, county or city level. If your friend is in North Carolina, Self-Help ( http://www.self-help.org/ ) is a great resource. They make loans, and can also connect her with other resources like peer-to-peer groups.

Good luck to your friend! I hope she finds the resources she needs!
