For DS#1 we had a colgate classica crib mattress. Unfortunately it has been regifted on and we are in the market for a new one.
I have come across very positive reviews for the Safety First crib mattress sold on walmart.com. In fact the only negative reviews say it is too firm which is definitely NOT a concern of us due to SIDS. Anyone have experience with this mattress?

I did do a search here but only a few things came up. I would love to save $100 but if the quality is really poor I think we should stay with the colgate. We are only having this child, no more after this!

I believe we got the Safety First Mattress from Walmart. It's nice and firm, which is really important. We bought in the store, and I took the advice to try compressing them and see how firm they are. Walmart sells another foam brand that isn't as firm, so we went with the Safety First mattress. As far as foam mattresses go, I don't think that all the bells and whistles of the higher end mattress are worth it. Basically, you pay for a prettier wrapping, and maybe some vents. As for durability, it was $40, so I figure that if our DS needs another mattress as a toddler, that's okay with me if it doesn't hold up (he is currently only 5 months old). Also, the price might also prompt you to spring for a new mattress the next time you have a child, which is supposed to be good for SIDS anyway.

As far as the mattress goes, I am very happy with it. I have seen a little dip for DS's head after putting him on the same spot on the mattress for weeks, but I am talking millimeters, and it went away when I turned him around the other way. This will be true with all mattresses, really.

we ended up buying this and it is just as firm as my old colgate. I get a very tight fit in my crib (DaVinci Anastasia) as well. I went and looked at it very closely and found it to be excellent. I figure if I need to replace it in a year, I will still be ahead (I could buy 3 of them for the price of the Colgate.)
