Every year for Christmas I try to get my DDs at least one "heirloom" type of toy (for lack of a better word). Something that would be worth saving once the girls have outgrown it, to potentially hand down to their kids someday. Not the mass produced plastic/battery-operated/light and sound making toys that we already have an overabundance of. Does anyone have a suggestion for a 2.5 y.o. in the $50 range?

And DS2 is getting this for Christmas.

Actually, all of Spiel and Holz stuff is very nice and could be considered "heirloom" quality.

Wow, those, particularly the 2nd one, are gorgeous. I have quite a lot of wooden toys/puzzles for my girls and they don't play with them. Makes me :(

I don't know if their prices are better (or if they even carry the particular item), but you could check some of these other sites.

I bought this train set for my 2 year old daughter. It's great, comes with everything including the track, trains and lots of other vehicles (cars, planes, boats) and a cardboard mat with a village picture. It's nice because it has pictures of where each track piece goes. She loves playing with it. The only problem is, my daughter drew on the cardboard mat with markers when I wasn't looking :( But I could totally see passing it down if they keep it in good condition. I'm considering buying another one and having the mat laminated or something. The whole set is $60.

Or a set of wooden Holtziger animals would also be fun.
