Hi everyone,
My baby is 4 months old and her pediatrician has given us the ok to start rice cereal.

She also recommended a book called "First Meals" by Kampbell or Karmel or something like that.

I'm not impressed by the book, though! Can anyone recommend something else?

Thanks!

IMO your ped misspoke by recommending rice cereal at 4 months. That is too early for solids based on the latest research. 6 months is the newer recommendation b/c that allows their guts to fully seal, lowers the risk of allergies, and allows the baby to try a larger variety of foods from the beginning.

My favorite book on starting solids ('weaning' is British for starting solid foods, the author is from the UK), www.babyled.com is her website:
Baby-led Weaning: Helping Your Baby To Love Good Food ~ Gill Rapley (http://www.amazon.com/Baby-led-Weaning-Helping-Your-Baby/dp/0091923808/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1258407988&sr=8-1)

Thank you for the recommendation!

I was surprised, too, but know of other people whose pediatricians gave them the ok to start trying solids. I should have elaborated... I breastfeed her a few times a day and give her formula a few times a day (I've returned to work). The rice cereal consists of a few half spoons right before her first bottle of the day, most of which ends up on her bib anyway.

Thank you again for the book info!

I used the Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron and found it very helpful and referenced it frequently in the beginning.

This website was also very helpful and convenient.

I too got the ok from my ped to start rice cereal at 4mo. After looking for readiness signs I felt he was ready and we've yet to find a food this little guy doesn't gobble up. Good luck with solids (and the decision on when to start), it's a fun yet messy journey :)

:yeahthat: I heard about this book/method from you, Katigre and can't thank you enough! We've been doing it for about a month now and I love it! DD is eating just about everything that we give her. It's so cool to see my 9 month old eating whole broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes, cucumber, corn, hummus (on rice cakes), meatballs, chicken, pork, bananas, apples, pears, oh and this weekend for the first time pancakes. :) It's a messy endeavor, but that's where the 2-dog clean-up crew comes in handy!
